I am the one who loves.

When it comes down to it, picking your doula isn't about credentials or experience or skills. Your doula will see you at your most vulnerable. They will put a reassuring hand on your partner's back when things get overwhelming. They'll look you in the eye and tell you the truth about what's going on and whether or not you need to be scared. They will hold your baby during a postpartum visit so you can go pee and brush your teeth.

Picking your doula comes down to picking the person that you feel most connected to, the person that you know you'll need.

So in today's blog, I'm going to try to tell you more about who I am and what I really give to my clients. Yes, I'm DONA-certified and teach prenatal yoga and those are all skills that I bring to the table. But I don't think that's what my clients will remember about me in 5 or 10 years. The thing they'll remember is feeling loved.

I emerged from a meditation retreat in 2017 with one clear message - my purpose on this earth is to love. I came here for love. I am the one who loves.

I have love bursting out of every fiber of my being, I always have. I was the kid who tried to save every single washed up jellyfish on the shore. I was the kid who talked to each of my gummy bears and said "I'm sorry, and thank you" before I ate them. I have always thought of my heart like that image from "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" when his heart grows two sizes too big. I am relentlessly optimistic, and try my best to see the goodness in every person that I meet.

When people ask me why I became a doula, I have a long story that I tell about how I got to where I am today. But the truth is that I love taking care of people. I love reminding people of how amazing and magic and perfect they are. I love holding a mirror up to the people in my life and helping them to see all the beautiful things that I see. And I also happen to have always been fascinated by pregnancy and birth. It took me a long time to see how those two things fit together, but once they did it's hard to understand how I didn't see it before.

So what is the thing that is uniquely my own as a doula, the most precious and important thing that I give to my clients? Love. I truly love every single one of my clients, their partners, and their babies. I think about them often and will always be there for them when they need me. I have the best job in the world. I get to support people as they become parents, which is like a rebirth of its own. Every time I run into former clients, they feel like family.

I know that not everyone needs love from their doula. But for those that do, it's here for you <3
