What is a Doula, and why would I want one?
DONA International defines a doula as "a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother before, during, and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve her healthiest, most satisfying experience possible." While doctors, nurses, and midwives are often excellent caregivers during labor, the demands of working in a hospital often prevent them from staying by your side through the entirety of labor. A doula is by your side from the moment they arrive at your home or the hospital, until an hour after the birth.
What if you are sick or otherwise unavailable when I got into labor?
I will be on call for you 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your EDD, but in the rare event that I am sick or at another birth, I will always have a backup doula identified to assist you.
How soon after contractions begin can I call you?
This is totally up to you! You can call me anytime, day or night. I am happy to come meet you in your home if it's too early to go to the hospital but you're needing support, or I can meet you at the hospital. We will work together to decide what the right time is.
How do you feel about pain medication?
I believe in supporting you, whatever your preferences are! I will help you figure out where you fall on the Pain Medication Preference Scale, then we will make a plan that is realistic and achievable.
What can you help with if I want an epidural?
I can still help in many ways! Many women will still labor at home or in the hospital for a bit prior to going to the hospital - I can provide support & comfort measures during those hours. After the epidural is administered, I can help you maintain good positioning to ensure labor continues to progress, take pictures, provide encouragement, and help you get settled after the baby is born.
Will you make my partner, friends, and family feel left out?
Creating an inclusive environment for those you love is one of my top priorities. I can help create a more inclusive experience by coaching those in the room on how to most be helpful to you so we all feel like a team!
